Human rights lawyer Dele Farotimi was recently granted bail by a Federal High Court in Ekiti State in the sum of ₦30 million.

Dele Farotimi’s legal troubles stem from allegations of criminal defamation against Senior Advocate of Nigeria and founder of Afe Babalola University, Aare Afe Babalola. The charges are based on claims made in Farotimi’s recently published book, Nigeria and Its Criminal Justice System. In the book, Farotimi allegedly accused Afe Babalola of influencing Supreme Court decisions, particularly in a land dispute case that spanned over two decades

Additionally, as part of his bail conditions, Farotimi has been barred from granting interviews or making public comments regarding the case.

The case has drawn public attention, with critics labeling the trial as an attempt to stifle his activism and freedom of expression. Protests and discussions are ongoing about the fairness of the charges and the broader implications for human rights in Nigeria.
