Who is Orunmila?
Orunmila has been described in traditional Ifa accounts as a short, dark man from Oke Igeti, located in present day Ile-Ife, western Nigeria. This description emphasizes his physical appearance during his earthly time.
The humility personified Orunmila lived among humans and guided them, but his worth was often unrecognized by some communities. For instance, in Oke Igeti, the people did not fully appreciate his teachings, which led him to move on and settle in other locations where he left lasting monuments and spiritual legacies.
Orunmila, also referred to as the “Witness of Creation,” holds a unique position among the Orishas.
An Orisha is a spiritual force or deity in Yoruba belief, representing different aspects of nature, humanity, and the divine. Each Orisha governs specific elements like rivers, thunder, fertility, or wisdom, and they act as intermediaries between humans and the Supreme Creator, Olodumare. The leader was focused on control and power, which led to the people’s dissatisfaction and unrest.
