The 17-year-old suspect, Jaylen Edgar, accused in a mass shooting in downtown Orlando that left two people dead and several injured, waived his initial court appearance on Saturday. The shooting took place early Friday morning, with Edgar allegedly opening fire into a large crowd gathered for Halloween festivities.

According to the Orlando Police Department, Edgar is facing potential charges, including two counts of first-degree murder with a firearm and at least six counts of attempted first-degree murder with a firearm. Orlando Police Chief Eric Smith estimated that the Halloween celebrations drew between 50,000 to 100,000 people to downtown Orlando at the time of the incident.

Edgar’s mother attended court on Saturday, where the state requested that he be held in custody until his adjudicatory hearing. This request was granted by the judge.

Following the shooting, Orange-Osceola State Attorney Andrew Bain stated at a news conference that Edgar could potentially be charged as an adult. “Based on the current information, several aggravating factors could lead us to charge him as an adult,” Bain said. However, he noted that further investigation is needed to determine the exact charges.

Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer also declared a local state of emergency, effective until November 8. Under this emergency order, downtown bars are required to stop alcohol sales at midnight, and a curfew is in place for the downtown area from 1 a.m. to 5 a.m.

The investigation into the incident is ongoing as officials work to understand the motive and circumstances surrounding the shooting.
