“One China Policy”: China Warns Taiwan, United States.

To emphasize the supremacy of its “One China Policy”, the People’s Republic of China recently carried out a series of naval exercises near the coast of Taiwan, showcasing its military capabilities and determination to preserve its territorial integrity. The exercises involved a significant number of warships and aircraft, with 42 warships and 26 aircraft participating.

The One China Policy refers to the diplomatic acknowledgement of the People’s Republic of China as the only legitimate government of China. It asserts that there is only one China consisting of both the mainland and Taiwan, and that the government of the People’s Republic of China is the sole representative of China in international affairs. This policy has been adopted by many countries around the world.

The One China Policy stems from the Chinese Civil War, which resulted in the Communist Party of China taking control of mainland China and the formation of the People’s Republic of China in 1949. The opposition, led by the Kuomintang, retreated to Taiwan where it continued to claim itself as the legitimate government of China.

Since then, the Chinese government has consistently insisted on the One China Policy in its diplomatic relations with other countries. The policy is based on the principle of non-recognition of Taiwan as a separate sovereign state.

However, Taiwan has maintained its own government systems and conducted independent foreign relations, albeit within a limited scope. It has been seeking international recognition as a sovereign state, but its efforts have been curtailed due to the One China Policy.

Meanwhile, the People’s Republic of China has consistently accused the United States of violating its One China Policy, as the latter continues to maintain relations with Taiwan, and even facilitating weapons package worth over $600 million for Taiwan against China. However, the United States has continued to insist on its adherence to the “One China Policy”.

Hence the timing of the naval exercises raised eyebrows, as they came shortly after the visit of Taiwan’s Vice President, William Lee, to America. China’s actions can be seen as a response to perceived outside interference and an assertion of its opposition to what it perceives as American hegemony.

China has long considered Taiwan as an integral part of its territory and has made it clear that any attempt to undermine its sovereignty will not be tolerated. The naval exercises serve as a message to Taiwan, the United States and the rest of the world about China’s determined stance on this issue.
