The Ndigbo Lagos, in a press statement released on Sunday and signed by its President General, Major General Obi Abel Umahi (rtd) OFR, announced the passing of the esteemed Professor Joseph Ogbonnaya Irukwu, the First elected President of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide.

The president-general expressed sadness and a deep sense of loss to the Igbo nation over the news of Professor Irukwu’s demise. He described the late professor as a leader and senior citizen, known for his good heart, caring nature, and the impact he made on the lives of those he encountered.

“He played a significant role in the development of Imo State University, now Abia State University, as a pioneer member of the Governing Council, and also contributed to the growth of his hometown of Item and the Old Bende Union,” the statement read.

Described as greatness personified, the statement added that, “Professor Irukwu was a man of many talents. He excelled as an administrator, academic, lawyer, and was often referred to as Nigeria’s Father of Insurance. His brilliance, administrative qualities, and inspiring approach to matters left a lasting impression on those he mentored and interacted with. His soft-spoken nature, compassion, and humility made him a role model for many.

“Throughout his successful life, Professor Irukwu held various positions in both the public and private sectors, always distinguishing himself. He served as the first President-General of the democratised Ohanaeze Ndigbo and was a founding member of Ndigbo Lagos. Until his passing, he was also a member of the Council of Elders of Ndigbo Lagos.”

The president-general of Ndigbo Lagos, Major General Obi Abel Umahi (rtd) OFR, thanked Professor Irukwu for a life well spent and offered prayers for his soul to find rest in the bosom of the Almighty.
